Daily Commentary from October 20, 2026.
In global markets, U.S. stock indices closed mixed amid earnings season (about 70 S&P 500 companies are reporting this week) and with oil prices falling from multi-week highs. The Dow Jones rose 1.0% and the S&P 500 0.3%, while the Nasdaq ended flat, held back by weakness in semiconductors. Asia had a negative day; the Kospi plummeted 3.7% following a disappointing artificial intelligence IPO, the Nikkei fell 1.3%, and the CSI 300 dropped 0.5%. Europe was the exception, with the Stoxx 600 rising 0.9%. In commodities, WTI fell 1.8% to $101.8 and Brent 0.4% to $109.1, still above $100 following the recent attacks on Saudi Arabia and maritime traffic in the Gulf. Gold fell 0.4% and silver rose 1.3%. The drop in crude oil prices helped Treasuries. The 10-year UST fell 3 bps and the 30-year UST fell 5 bps, while the 2-year UST rose 1 bps, so the yield curve flattened, with the long end leading the decline. The 10-year Bund fell 5.6 bps and the 10-year Gilt fell 1.7 bps. On the FX and volatility front, the DXY fell 0.2% to 101.7, and the VIX dropped 1.1 points to 17.4.
In Venezuela/PDVSA, the sovereign yield curve fell 0.3 points and PDVSA declined 0.2–0.3 points, while Elecar dropped 1.1 points and the PDV20 closed flat. Trading volume totaled USD 71 million, concentrated in PDV'22 and PDV'27.
Latin American markets closed mixed. Brazil led the way with a gain of 0.6 points, while Mexico, Argentina, Pemex, and the Dominican Republic each rose 0.1 points. On the downside, Ecuador fell 0.6 points, El Salvador 0.2 points, and Colombia 0.1 points. Average volume.
