The bull market received a fresh boost at the end of a month that has lived up to its reputation for volatility, with optimism about earnings outweighing concerns about a rally that is mainly focused on tech giants.

After a brief pause in the S&P 500 following the $17 billion surge, the index rose on strong outlooks from Amazon.com Inc. and Apple Inc. To be fair, not all of the mega-caps rose on Friday. And the iPhone maker's advance faded as falling sales in China tempered enthusiasm for what promises to be a busy holiday season.
