Stocks pared their losses on hopes of an extension of the deadline. Hopes for a diplomatic resolution to the war in the Middle East lifted stocks from their session lows before the deadline set by President Donald Trump for Iran to agree to a ceasefire expired.

Pakistan urged the United States to extend the deadline by two weeks, while calling on Tehran to open the Strait of Hormuz, and mediators moved quickly to keep the ceasefire talks on track.

Oil opened up 3% this morning, with Brent futures closing down 2.17%
